Why Art is Needed Now (More Than Ever)
Let’s be real — the world feels pretty upside down right now. There’s uncertainty everywhere, people are at each other’s throats, the economy is tanking, and it’s getting harder to know what’s even true anymore. Kindness and decency feel almost quaint. And now, on top of everything else, AI is literally doing our thinking for us.
Art has never been more necessary than it is in this moment.
Here’s the thing about art that we forget: it doesn’t lie. It doesn’t spin, manipulate, or push an agenda. It’s just real — something a human being pulled from deep inside themselves and brought to life with their own two hands. Artists create something from nothing. There’s no algorithm driving it. It’s not made of AI slop-just intention and craft and truth.
And art is genuinely good for us. It brings joy, for starters — which, in this news cycle, is no small thing. It gives you a place to get lost, to breathe, to forget the chaos outside for a minute. Realistic art transports you completely. Portraits connect you to people who came before you — who survived wars, famines, and upheaval that make our current moment feel a little more survivable too. We’ve been through it before, and yet, somehow, we’re still here.
But maybe the biggest gift art gives us is that it makes us think — and think for ourselves. It challenges you to decode meaning, consider someone else’s choices, and figure out what it all means to you personally. Abstract art especially asks you to interpret what you see. There’s no one telling you what to see or feel-just you and the work, in a world that is otherwise screaming at you every second of every day.
Most importantly, art lets you step inside someone else’s perspective. In a time when we’ve forgotten how to do that with each other, that might just be the most radical thing it offers.
Truth is hard to find right now. Art still has it.
